"I
would recommend ACUMEN. We bought it 5 years ago when we had maybe 15 titles.
It's helped us grow more than 10-fold since. The nice thing about ACUMEN is that
it will grow with you. We bought the single-user version and had one ACUMEN workstation.
We ran that for about three months and went to three users. And then grew from
there. I know that when I bought that first one-user system, I thought it was
so...... expensive, but it has made such an enormous difference that it's more
than paid for itself. Actually, within three months we didn't know how we had
ever lived without it.
Everything at Sourcebooks is pretty well geared
around ACUMEN. And I absolutely don't have any stake in ACUMEN. But I do think
it's a first rate program. It also has good tech support which becomes more and
more important as your accounting system gets larger. Their web site is acumenbook.com.
It also lists some of the publishers using ACUMEN so you can get an idea of the
range of presses."

package is the ongoing development. There is a significant monthly support fee,
but you really get something in return. We don't have to wait for annual updates--there
are new features and improvements being developed constantly. And there's a real
openness to customer feature requests. They don't all happen, or even happen right
away, but they are closely listened to and considered, and as they're implemented
the software keeps getting better.
